How to get more Google reviews without begging

Reviews are the most underused asset in local marketing. Here is a repeatable system for collecting them without awkward conversations.

Google reviews are the closest thing to free advertising that exists for local service businesses. A business with 80 four and five star reviews will almost always outperform a competitor with 10, even if the competitor runs better ads.

Most business owners know this. But they rely on customers reviewing them spontaneously, which rarely happens. Here is how to build a system that generates reviews consistently.

Why customers don't leave reviews unprompted

It is not because they are unhappy. Most satisfied customers simply forget. The job is done. They move on. Leaving a review requires effort and they have no reason to prioritise it.

The businesses that collect reviews consistently are the ones that make it easy and ask at the right moment.

When to ask

Timing is everything. The best moment to ask for a review is right after a positive interaction. Specifically:

  • Right after completing a job when the customer is pleased
  • When a customer compliments you verbally
  • When you send an invoice for work they are clearly happy with
  • During a follow-up call if they confirm satisfaction

Ask too late and the moment has passed. Ask during the job and it feels premature.

How to ask

In person: "I'm glad it went well. We rely heavily on Google reviews to find new customers. Would you mind leaving one? I can send you the link right now."

Then send the link immediately. Do not wait until later.

Via SMS or email: Keep it short. One sentence explaining why reviews matter to your business. One sentence asking. Direct link to your Google review page. No paragraph of explanation. No pressure.

Building a review automation system

The manual approach works but it requires you to remember. A better system:

  • Trigger an automated review request SMS 24 hours after a job is marked complete in your CRM
  • Send a follow-up email 3 days later if no action was taken
  • Include a direct link every time so there are zero steps between wanting to leave a review and leaving one

We build this into every client's system. Businesses that automate review requests consistently outpace competitors in review volume within 60 to 90 days.

What to do with your reviews

Respond to every review. This shows prospective customers that you are engaged and care about feedback. For negative reviews, respond professionally and offer to resolve the issue offline. Your response matters more to prospects than the review itself.

Screenshot and share positive reviews. Put them on your website, your ads, your landing pages. Social proof is more persuasive than anything you write about yourself.

The compound effect

A business that generates 3 new reviews per month will have 36 in a year. Two years in, they have 72. A competitor who waits for reviews to come in spontaneously might have 12. The gap compounds and becomes increasingly difficult to close.

Start the system this week. The reviews you collect this month will be working for you two years from now.
